CHOICE 3: Matthew 14:22-33 Walking on the Sea

  • When the Apostles first saw Christ walking on the water, they were worried. They thought it was a spirit and it scared them. They “cried out in fear.”
  • Peter responded to Christ walking on the water by telling Christ to allow him to walk on the water too. I think Peter’s response means he was a little skeptical, but knew that if it was really Christ he would be able to walk on the water too. He had great faith in the miracles Christ could perform.

  • Peter began to sink because he was afraid.

  • When Peter started sinking he cried out for Jesus to save him. The word “immediately” describes the timing of Christ’s response to Peter’s request. He responded right away.

  • In order to walk successfully on the water, Peter had to have his focus be on Christ. If Christ is our foundation, then our whole bodies will be filled with light and we will understand all things. Peter had great faith. He knew that Christ could make it so he could walk on water, and he also knew Christ had the power to save him when he began to sink.
    • This same principle can be applied to my life. We all experience storms in life. There is heartache and tests scattered all along our path. What I learn from these scriptures is that in order to weather these storms, I must be focused on Christ. My faith has to be strong and immovable. If I ever feel like I’m sinking, I can call out to Him and He will lift me back up and bring me peace.
