A Real Hero

Darryl received the 2011 Life Saving Award for the Ontario Police Department. On Black Friday Darryl was working at Ontario Mills. A young man suddenly passed out in one of the stores. One of the young workers at the store rushed over and noticed that the man was not breathing. He started performing CPR to the best of his ability until Darryl and his partner arrived on scene. Darryl's partner immediately began crowd control while Darryl began checking the man who had passed out. By this time the man had no pulse and was still not breathing. Darryl took over and began CPR chest compressions and the store clerk gave breaths when Darryl instructed him to. The store clerk later said that he thought Darryl was going to break the man's ribs by how hard he was doing the chest compressions (which they say that if you break someone's rib doing CPR you've actually done it right). Darryl continued the labor intensive chest compressions for FIVE MINUTES (which feels like forever when your adrenaline is going and you're exhausted) until the firemen and paramedics arrived on scene. They immediately rushed the man to the hospital. On the way to the hospital the man became coherent and ended up surviving the whole ordeal. A few days later Darryl received an email from the fire chief thanking him for his bravery and ability to think and act quickly. He explained in the email that if Darryl had not done what he did, the man would have died. A few weeks ago the police department awarded Darryl with the life saving award. There were many awards given that day, but they saved his for the very end and he was the star of the show! I noticed when I was there how much respect Darryl's fellow officers have for him. He lights up the room with his kindness and integrity and I really am lucky to be his wife.

Darryl and the store clerk....the heroes!

Cool story! I got CPR certified but would probably still freak out if I actually had to do it. Good job Darryl!
