First Injury

So let me just start by saying that this happened a couple months ago and I am way behind in blogging about it! Since I plan to print out a blog book every year as our family journal, I don't want to leave this one out!

Over here at the Lauritzen household, we rang in the new year with our first traumatic child injury experience. It was a normal afternoon. I had just pulled in the driveway after picking Kyle up from school and we were all getting out of the car. I had a bunch of stuff to take inside, so I went inside the house and laid my things on the kitchen counter. Just as I was about to head back to the car to make sure the kids were all getting out, I heard Kyle screaming. This was not just a little scream, he was screaming bloody murder. I ran back out the front door, and all I could see was a puddle of blood underneath him. WHAT THE??? Now, I tend to be the type of person that gets worked up over things that aren't that big of a deal, but I learned something about myself with this experience....when it comes to situations where I need to be strong and calm for the kids, I can really be strong and calm! Who would've guessed??!

As I looked a little closer, I could tell the blood was dripping off his hand. I calmly asked him what happened. I'll go ahead and admit it, my first thought was that the darn blood was gonna ruin his new white shoes and stain his shirt...which thank goodness he was wearing a red shirt that day so no major damage was done.

In between Kyle's sobs of great intensity, I was able to make out that he had slammed his thumb in the car door. I ran inside the house to grab a towel to wrap around his thumb. By this time, all 3 children were absolutely hysterical, especially Valerie. She was screaming and crying "Kyle ok? Kyle ok? Kyle owie?" So not only was I trying to get the towel wrapped around Kyle's nasty-looking thumb, but I was also trying to calm Valerie down! My next thought was that I needed to take Kyle to the hospital. But there was no way I was gonna take all 3 of them to the hospital! I called my mother-in-law to come stay with Damon and Valerie, but I knew it would take a little while for her to get here and I didn't want to wait too long since Kyle was freaking out. My wonderful neighbor across the street ran over and took Damon and Valerie( who were both barefoot and looked really ghetto that day...embarassed mom moment). Kyle and I were off!

On the drive to the hospital, I was pretty proud of myself for staying so calm...until I started to feel lightheaded and began panicking that I was going to pass out on the freeway and then we'd be dead instead of just getting stitches. Needless to say, we made it to the hospital safely. Darryl left work early and met us there. To make a long story short, his thumb ended up broken. The fingernail was barely hanging by a thread so they had to stitch it back on. He had to wear a splint on his thumb for the next 6 weeks.

Here are some pics from the hospital, for those of you who like to look at gross pictures.

Let's just say Kyle is very careful now whenever he opens or shuts the car doors.
